The Story
Ramleela is a 10-day Hindu tradition that re-enacts the Ramayana, the story of Lord Rama. This Leela (play) was originally created by the 17th Century saint poet Tulsidas and follows an epic tale of love, loss, betrayal and the triumph of good over evil.
Brought by North Indian indentured labourers, Ramleela was performed on small tracts of land between barrack buildings. Despite the harsh conditions of Indentureship, this has become an integral part of Trinidad and Tobago's cultural landscape and an early form of community theatre, showing the perseverance and survival of a people.
