The Story
Divali is celebrated on Amaavasya, the fifteenth night of the dark fortnight of Kaartik (October/November). The word comes from Sanskrit "Deepavali" - Deepa (light) and Avali (row) - the Festival of Lights.
Traditionally marked by lighting of deyas (clay lamps filled with oil), cleaning homes, wearing new clothing, and giving charity.
The aim of Divali celebrations is to get man moving on the spiritual path toward enlightenment. As they light the lamps, those celebrating are reminded to light the lamps of wisdom, goodness and God-consciousness in themselves.
