The Story
Started in 1990, The Santa Rosa First Peoples Community has held its Heritage Week during the week of recognition on October 14. The community opened its doors to other indigenous communities, religious bodies and the public.
The Santa Rosa First Peoples Community in Arima represents the last organized Indigenous group in Trinidad & Tobago.
What to Expect
Smoke Ceremony: A traditional purification ritual
Water Ritual: An early morning trip to the river to witness the Community's Water Ritual. Being nature worshippers, the Community sees water as "Life" and believes the river possesses its own Spirit/God.
Devotees come adorned in traditional attire including knitted/crocheted wool clothing, intricate headpieces and engraved chac-chacs. The Chief prepares offerings and a special herbal wash used for cleansing before participation.
Street Parades: Cultural processions through the community.
